The recently published NZ tragedy where a storeman lost his life in a racking collapse serves as a harsh reminder of the critical need for robust safety measures around warehouse racking. Nine tonnes of badly loaded steel fell and killed a Christchurch man, in what WorkSafe New Zealand says is a stark warning to any business that uses storage racks or shelving as part of its operations. 33-year-old Franchesco Krueger was sweeping underneath racking, when it collapsed on him at United Steel in Wigram New Zealand in November 2020. On November 1, the company was sentenced at the Christchurch District Court and fined $330,000, and ordered to pay $100,000 in emotional harm reparation.
To ensure racking safety, installation should only be handled by certified professionals who understand both the racking manufacturer’s specifications and the unique requirements of each warehouse. Racking must be suited to the type of goods stored, accounting for factors like weight and dimensions. Improper installation or use of substandard materials can significantly reduce structural integrity, heightening the risk of collapse under heavy loads or daily wear and tear.
Regular inspections are also critical. In a busy warehouse environment, racking can suffer damage from forklifts or improper loading practices. A slight compromise in the structure can lead to severe consequences if not addressed. Facilities should schedule frequent visual checks, looking for any signs of bending, cracking, or loosened bolts.
